Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Course Information

Project Lead the Way (PLTW) is a rigorous engineering pathway for high school students.  All courses require an interest in creating and designing solutions to problems, strong math and critical thinking skills, and a willingness to work collaboratively in groups.

Year 1: Introduction to Engineering Design
Students learn about the engineering design process, practice sketching and dimensioning techniques, participate in engineering design challenges, and create 3D imaging files using computer software. (9th and 10th grade)

Year 2 and Year 3: Students choose one of the two engineering pathways listed below.

Pathway 1 Engineering Design
Aerospace Engineering
Students explore the physics of flight and bring what they’re learning to life through hands-on projects like designing a glider and creating a program for an autonomous space rover.  (10th, 11th, 12th priority to 10th) (CTE) 7730 concentrator

Digital Electronics
Students explore the foundations of computing by engaging in circuit design processes to create combinational logic and sequential logic (memory) as electrical engineers do in industry. (10th 11th 12th priority to 11th) (CTE) 7731 capstone

Pathway 2 Information and Communication Technology: Computer Science
AP Computer Science A: 
Students learn programming in Java, including classes, arrays, and recursion. This course prepares students for the AP Computer Science A exam. (10th 11th 12th priority to 10&11) (CTE) 8132 concentrator

Data Structures and Algorithms HP: 
Students use Java to learn the basic data structures underlying the digital world. Students are shown how to evaluate the efficiency of algorithms in both memory space and computational time and how different data structures can optimize these efficiencies. (10th, 11th, 12th, priority to 10&11) (CTE) capstone

Year 4:  PLTW Engineering Academy: The academy is a double block (two periods) project-based course with an integrated English 12 P class.

Engineering Design and Development
During the first semester, students will compete in the JPL Invention Challenge. During the second semester, students identify a real-world challenge and then research, design, and test a solution, ultimately presenting their unique solutions to a panel of engineers.   *Students need to have completed one of the PLTW pathways prior to enrolling in this class.
